What to do if you have no hot water? Check your pilot light/fuse box.

Gas hot water system? Check your pilot light.

If you have a gas hot water system, you need to check that the pilot light has not gone out.

  1. Check the lighting instructions on the side of the hot water system, they may differ from the following:
  2. Make sure that the temperature setting is on its lowest position. Then turn the gas valve to ‘Off’. Wait about ten minutes before you do anything else, or as long as the instructions indicate. There may be some lingering gas that you want to dissipate before you try to light the pilot.
  3. Remove the outer cover from the burner assembly. It should snap off. There is usually an inner cover that you will also need to remove.
  4. Turn the dial to ‘Pilot’ and hold down the button. Make sure you are ready with a lighter or match. If the pilot does not light quickly enough the gas valve will shut down and you will have to wait again. Light the pilot or press the inbuilt igniter button until the pilot lights, and hold the button down for as long as it tells you.
  5. Watch through the glass and make sure the pilot stays lit. Wait the proper amount of time and turn the gas valve to ‘ON’. After that you can set the thermostat to the desired temperature.
  6. If the water has been off for any length of time the burner should light right away. Make sure it is burning properly and replace the outer cover.

Electric hot water system? Check your fuse box.

If you have an electric hot water system, you need to check that the fuse has not tripped.

  1. Check the hot water fuse in your switch box and make sure it is turned on.
  2. Allow enough time for the hot water to reheat; this usually takes 2-4 hours. If your hot water system is on separate electricity meter, it will run on the off-peak tariff and will only heat up overnight.
